The Green Line Metro has now reached Madavara (BIEC), which is at the edge of North-West Bengaluru. But for people living in Nelamangala, there is still a 12 km gap where the Metro is not yet built. As of 2026, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited has moved ahead from basic study work to preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR). This plan is for a 59.6 km Metro extension from Madavara to Tumakuru, passing through Nelamangala.

This big project, costing over ₹20,000 crore, is part of the Phase 4 Metro plan. It aims to improve travel along NH-48 and make it a fast and smooth travel route. Important areas like Makali, Dasanapura, and the Nelamangala town centre will benefit from this. There are still some discussions about whether this plan is better than suburban rail. But starting the DPR work shows that the project is becoming serious. If completed, it can greatly improve transport, real estate, and business growth in this fast-developing area.

Current Status: How Close is the Metro to Nelamangala Right Now?

As of 2026, the Namma Metro Green Line is fully running up to Madavara (BIEC). This station is an important entry point to the city and is located next to the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre. Because of this extension, the Metro has come much closer to the north-west areas of Bengaluru. However, it is still the last stop for people travelling towards Tumakuru.

Even though Madavara feels “near,” Nelamangala is still about 10 to 12 kilometres away on NH-48. For people living in Nelamangala, the Metro line can be seen from far away, but it is not yet available near their homes. This distance may look small on a map, but in Bengaluru traffic, especially during busy hours, it becomes a big problem and slows down daily travel.

Right now, people from Nelamangala have to use more than one type of transport to reach the Metro. This gap is managed in the following ways:

  • BMTC Buses: Buses like the 258 series go from Nelamangala Bus Stand to Madavara. The travel time is about 25 to 40 minutes, based on traffic near the toll gate.
  • Private Vehicles & Autos: Many people go by bike or take shared autos to reach Madavara. After that, they park or get off and continue their journey by Metro.
  • Feeder Services: There is a strong demand for special Metro feeder buses, but right now, people depend on regular highway transport. Because of this, the last part of the journey is the most uncertain.

The Proposed Bangalore to Tumkur Metro Extension

The proposed Metro extension from Madavara (BIEC) to Tumakuru is one of the biggest infrastructure projects planned in Karnataka in 2026. This project is very important because it will be the first time Namma Metro connects two cities, helping to reduce heavy traffic on NH-48.

This Metro extension is planned as a 59.6 km elevated track, which means it will run above the ground. It will act as a major extension of the Green Line towards the north. In early 2026, the project moved from just an idea to the active planning stage. The work for the Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been given to Aarvee Engineering Consultants.

The main goal of this project is to help around 2.8 lakh people who may travel on this route every day by 2032. By moving people from buses and private vehicles to the Metro, the government wants to:

  • Reduce traffic on highways
  • Save travel time
  • Make travel smoother and more reliable

Right now, travel between Bengaluru and Tumakuru can take around 2 hours or even more in traffic. With the Metro, this could become 75 to 90 minutes more predictably.

Proposed Route and Important Stations

The final list of stations will be ready after the DPR report is finished (by mid-2026). Right now, the plan shows there may be about 25 to 27 stations, and most of them will be built above the ground. The Metro route is planned to pass through busy living areas and work areas, such as:

  • Nelamangala Area: Some important stops include: Makali, Dasanapura, and Nelamangala Town.
  • Industrial Areas: The Metro will also go through big work areas like Dabaspet (also called Dobbaspet) and Sompura.
  • Tumakuru Side: On the Tumakuru side, main stops include: Kyathasandra, Tumakuru Bus Stand. These places will be the main entry points into Tumakuru.

Namma Metro Phase 4: To Know in 2026

In 2026, Namma Metro Phase 4 has moved from just an idea to a high-priority project. While earlier phases focus on the city centre and the airport, Phase 4 is planned to connect Bengaluru with fast-growing nearby towns like Nelamangala. Phase 4 shows a new way of planning transport in Bengaluru. It plans to add more than 129 km of new Metro lines, mainly by extending routes far into the suburbs. The aim is to create a Transit-Oriented Region, where people can:

  • Live in affordable towns outside the city.
  • Travel to the city easily.
  • Reach work in less than one hour.

Key Developments in 2026

DPR Work Started: In early 2026, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited started work on a big report for the Metro line from Madavara to Tumakuru, which also includes Nelamangala. The report checks:

  • Where stations will be built
  • How much land is needed
  • What problems may come

PPP Funding Model: The project may cost more than ₹20,000 crore. To manage this, the government is using a PPP plan. In this plan:

  • Private builders help build Metro stations
  • In return, they can use the space for shops or businesses

Feasibility Study Approved: A study was approved in late 2025. It showed that many people will use the Metro, so building a Metro is better than using a normal train for this route.

Status of Phase 4 Corridors - 2026

Phase 4 includes many important routes, not just the Nelamangala line. Current status of key corridors:

Corridor Approx. Distance 2026 Status
Madavara to Tumakuru (via Nelamangala) 52.4 km DPR in Progress
KR Puram to Hoskote 15 km Feasibility Study complete
Challaghatta to Bidadi 15 km Proposed/Planning
Silk Institute to Harohalli 24 km Proposed/Planning
Bommasandra to Attibele 11 km Feasibility Study Complete

Is Nelamangala a Good Investment Before Metro Comes?

Buying land in Nelamangala before the Metro comes is a smart choice. Prices are still low now, before big growth starts. In early 2026, land costs about ₹3,500 to ₹6,500 per sq. ft., which is cheaper than in North and East Bengaluru. Nelamangala is growing not only because of the Metro. Big road projects like the Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR) and the Bangalore Business Corridor are also helping. Because of these, the area is becoming a big place for jobs, factories, and transport. Projects like KNS Samooha are popular because they give affordable plots in a growing area. Usually, land prices go up the most in the early stage, before construction starts. So, many people think now is a good time to invest, before prices go up when the Metro work begins.
